  2. arose from conflicting ambitions in Korea and
  3. Manchuria, specifically, the Russian
  4. occupation of Port Arthur (modern Luda) 1896
  5. and of the Amur province 1900. Japan
  6. successfully besieged Port Arthur May
  7. 1904-Jan 1905, took Mukden 29 Feb-10 Mar, and
  8. on 27 May defeated the Russian Baltic fleet,
  9. which had sailed halfway around the world to
  10. Tsushima Strait. A peace was signed in
  11. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA, 23 Aug 1905.
  12. Russia surrendered its lease on Port Arthur,
  13. ceded S Sakhalin to Japan, evacuated
  14. Manchuria, and recognized Japan's interests
  15. in Korea.
